Northeast Nodaway Superintendent Jeff Mehlenbacher discusses the school’s new addition with board members Sheldon Scadden and Jeff Redden during the August board meeting.

The Northeast Nodaway Board of Education met on August 18 to set the tax levy and conduct the following business:

•Northeast Nodaway’s assessed value increased by $175,250. Board members set the 2016-2017 tax levy at $5.8566 per $100 of assessed value.

•The ag enclosure is almost complete. The wiring, drywall and installation are finished.

•Heidi Moffat presented the preschool curriculum goals.

•Terry Runde gave the nursing report. She will now be at the school 35 hours a week.

•The PTO purchased school supplies for each student and donated $100 to each teacher for classroom supplies.

•Kaw Valley Engineering, Kansas City, will conduct a soil test for $3,600 in preparation for the track project. The track design engineer requested a land survey. Kaw Valley Engineering bid the survey for $8,700. Board members decided not to approve the land survey until Mehlenbacher gathers more information about the survey and whether it is necessary.

•The board approved adding the position of a part-time K-12 secretary.

•Principal Ken Grove and Assistant Principal Jason McDowell recently visited every classroom in the district, read stories to the elementary students and talked with older students about expectations and rules.

•Grove proposed a Friday night graduation to avoid conflict with baseball tournaments and Mother’s Day. The board discussed shortening the senior trip by a day in order to have students back by the Thursday before graduation. Administration will check with local churches about baccalaureate and report to the board in September.
