The North Nodaway School Board met July 20.
Within the business items addressed was finalizing the 2016-2017 middle school-high school student-parent handbook.
The board approved one major change in the handbook from last year. Last year, students were required to have a 97 percent attendance rate as well as a B- grade to avoid taking finals. The board is now requiring an A- grade to go with a 97 percent attendance rate to be exempt from finals.
Under new business, the board approved a request from volunteers in Pickering to clean the old baseball field in Pickering. The field is currently overgrown with grass and weeds. The board plans to use the field for recess and physical education classes for the elementary school. Also, the tax hearing date has been set for 6:45 pm, August 17 in the high school ITV room. The next regular board meeting will follow the tax hearing.
The board also approved a $25,000 payment in March for the bond prepayment resolution. This will save money in interest.
The superintendent report was given by James Simmelink. He updated the board on the progress of the new science room. The floor is currently being installed and the room is almost fully painted. Simmelink also reported there was damage done to the elementary school in Pickering. Simmelink is waiting to hear back from insurance to know how much reimbursement the company will pay for the repair.
Simmelink also informed the board that only one of the four air conditioners on the third floor in the high school is working. One of the air conditioners must be replaced while the other two may be repaired. The board may have to have a special meeting to approve the purchase of an air conditioner.
