wpid-Northeast-Nodaway.indd_Northeast Nodaway Superintendent Jeff Mehlenbacher announced recently the purchase of 20 acres east of the school in Ravenwood.

The parcel of ground is on the north side of Highway O and is east of the city park. It will allow walking accessibility from the school without having to cross the highway Mehlenbacher said.

A future NEN athletic facility is in the preliminary phase. The district is looking at companies to do soil samples and survey this fall. Plans are to make a track and baseball field in the future, with the track being the priority.

The school officials are approaching the Ravenwood City Council to gain approval for access over city property. At the current time there is only a gravel drive allowing access off of Highway O.

There is no estimated timeline for completion.

Mehlenbacher said that this is not only a school project, but a community one and asset for Ravenwood. After completion, the community will be able to use the facility, so it won’t just be for school activities.

Fundraising is beginning for the project. Mehlenbacher is looking into grants and wants to utilize volunteer work. If interested in helping with the project, contact Mehlenbacher at 660.937.3125.
