The board of education met on August 13 to discuss the following business of the West Nodaway R-I school district:
The board conducted the tax rate hearing for the 2014-15 year. The board approved in regular session the rate of $4.1118 per $100 valuation.
The West Nodaway Flag Football organization brought a proposal to the board asking for permission to play on the WN football field at 1 pm, Sunday afternoons in September. The group had been playing at Fairfax, but hadn’t wanted to switch to tackle football. Three other teams will be joining the WN group. The board agreed to their plan.
Shannon Nolte, principal, also presented a proposal on an incentive program for those students scoring proficient, advanced or improving their MAP/EOC scores. The program would give points to the student which they could use toward personal excused absence days; reimbursement of ACT costs or dual credit costs. The board had additional questions and will take up the proposal at the September meeting.
Roger Johnson, athletic director, updated the board on the athletic co-ops with North Nodaway. Johnson indicated that he was pleased with the amount of progress being made by the combined teams.
Nancy Greeley, superintendent, reported that there was an air conditioning unit that would need to be replaced for the Ag classroom. There has been no movement on the elementary heating and cooling update. She is hoping that a presentation can be made at the September meeting.
Greeley also informed the board that WN had received the 21st Century Grant for the before and after school programs.
The board authorized the payment of the bills. There were no fund transfers. The financial statement and fund balances were reviewed.
The board approved the hiring of Bryce Buholt for head boys baseball coach and Heath Harris for assistant boys baseball coach for the 2014-15 school year. They also affirmed the substitute teacher list and revised Lynn Carlson’s salary on his teaching contract. The board also approved the Emergency Leave Bank Policy with amendments.
The WN tuition rate for the 2014-15 school year was set at $8,889.
