The Maryville City Council saved approximately $91,600 as they purchased several pieces of new equipment for less than their budgeted amounts during their regular meeting March 13.

It was approved to purchase a Jacobson Turf Cat Mower at $17,195 for Mozingo Lake Recreation Park from Kansas Golf and Turf, Lenexa, KS, which was $8,805 under budget.

The council purchased two fleet vehicles, a $24,653.78 Ford sedan patrol car for Maryville Public Safety and a $31,297 Ford F250 truck for the sewer maintenance division of public works, from Tri-State Ford Lincoln, Maryville, for a total of $56,387.40 which was $5,112 under budget.

It was approved to purchase a $8,250 variable frequency drive, which is an electronic controller that adjusts pump speed, for the water treatment plant from R/S Electric Corp., St. Joseph, which was $1,750 under budget.

In order to save costs on the Mozingo Conference Center construction, it was decided that city staff would install the storm drainage pipes and storm boxes instead of contracting the work. The council approved the purchase of drainage pipes for $12,411.16 from Scheib Drainage Products, Inc., Oregon, MO, and the $10,603 junction boxes from E&M Precast, Gower, for a total of $23,014.16. This saved the city approximately $57,900.

The Public Works Sewer Maintenance Division utilizes a crane truck to pull pumps to the city’s lift stations for maintenance and repair. The current unit is failing. The city council approved the purchase of a $31,950 1999 Ford F-450 diesel truck with a crane from Shreve Truck and Equipment Sales, Barnsdall, OK. The unit has 65,000 miles, is two-wheel drive and includes a 6,000-pound crane that has been used 10 hours. The unit came in $18,050 under budget.

City staff looked into purchasing a new mini-excavator to replace the current one. Due to the high cost, they decided to repair the existing excavator instead. It was approved to pay Victor L. Phillips Co., Kansas City, $5,866.50 to repair the Takeuchi Mini-Excavator.

Also, it was approved to lease 942.5 square feet of hangar space at the Northwest Missouri Regional Airport to TJ and Bridget Kenny for an annual fee of $207.35.

The tourism committee was appointed and will include Maryville City Manager Greg McDanel, Nodaway County Economic Development Director Josh McKim, Greater Maryville Chamber of Commerce Director Lily White, Maryville Downtown Improvement Organization President Matt Gaarder, Maryville Parks & Recreation Director Aaron Dobson, Maryville City Councilwoman Renee Riedel, Donell Anderson, Coby Lamb and Kelley Baldwin. A representative from Northwest Missouri State University will be appointed at a later date.

It was approved to allow the Maryville Host Lions to hold the farmers’ market on the corner of Fourth and Buchanan Streets again this year. The market will be open from 6 am to noon, Saturdays, beginning in late May and will close in October.

In the absence of McDanel, Assistant City Manager Ryan Heiland reported the following:

• Maryville is requesting proposals for the 2017 asphalt mill and overlay project. The mandatory pre-bid meeting is at 10 am, Monday, March 20. Proposals are due at 10 am, Tuesday, April 4.

• Mozingo Lake Recreation Park is accepting proposals for cutting and baling hay. Contracts will be for three years and will include approximately 20 more acres than last year. Proposals are due at 3 pm, Monday, March 20 at the city hall.

• There will be four junior golf camps this season, June 3-5, June 24-26, July 15-17 and August 5-7, at a cost of $40 per participant.

• Maryville Public Safety is hosting an open house for the public from 5 to 7:30 pm, Tuesday, March 28. Hamburgers and hotdogs will be served.
