Barnard was the site of several impromptu solar eclipse viewings on August 21. Harold and Doris McLean, Maryville, and Merle and Patti Walter, Mt. Ayr, IA, set up to view the eclipse in the South Nodaway R-IV school parking lot. They were joined by two bus loads of Northwest Missouri State University international students.

Along the roadway the Ryan and Tracy Kracht family from St. Paul, MN, viewed the eclipse. Ryan chose Barnard because there looked to be less cloud cover there.

Clouds stayed light, allowing those gathered to view the eclipse stages through protective eyewear. Heavy clouds moved in just before totality, so the watchers got to view twilight through dusk under the clouds.
