The West Nodaway R-I Board of Education met in open and closed session on November 14 to handle the following school district business.

With Elementary Principal Holly Brady on maternity leave, Superintendent Shannon Nolte read all the principals and superintendant reports. Nolte had help from one of the elementary teachers in completing the elementary report.

The 2017-18 school year audit was reviewed and approved. It will be sent to the state before the December 31 deadline.

The WN auditor, Arthur White, is retiring and will not be conducting the school audit in the future. Nolte will ask the board to approve the school district to seek bids for an auditor for the next three years at the December meeting.

The amendments to the 2018-19 Middle School, High School Student Handbook were reviewed and approved. The amendments mainly concerned changes to the honor roll brought about by the school using standards based grading in the middle school.

“This is an honor roll which recognizes our high achieving students,” Nolte said on the needed changes.

The school received the results from the DESE Desk Monitoring of Special Education of 10 to 12 WN student files conducted in 2017-18. Out of a total of 287 indicators audited, 10 indicators were out of compliance and are in need of a Corrective Action Plan to be completed by November 30.

The MAP testing will be reviewed in December and APR review and summary will be available by February 2019, instead of the usual November or December.

Amendments were made to the 2018-19 budget.

The school board will pay a portion of the December staff social to be held at A&G Restaurant.

Three candidates to fill three-year terms will be sought for the board. Interested individuals may file from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday, starting Tuesday, December 11 through Tuesday, January 15, 2019, at the superintendent’s office. The school will be closed for the holiday from December 24, until 8 am, Monday, January 7, 2019. The office will be closed in the event of inclement weather.

In closed session, Jerod Downing was hired as the junior high scholar bowl coach.
