At the beginning of the season, not even Trey Maughan would have believed how far he’s come this season. His original goal was to simply make it to state and become an all-state golfer. Fast forward to May 2 when Maughan took first at the state sectional tournament at the Fairview Golf Course in St. Joseph when he shot a 73 on a 72 par course. His goal has now switched from making it as an all-state golfer to winning the May 14-15 state golf tournament in Springfield at the Twin Oaks golf course.

“I feel like I’ve really improved since last year’s state tournament,” Maughan said, mentioning his 62nd place finish in the two-day tournament. “This year’s tournament will be at a country club golf course so I expect the fairways to be tighter with lots of trees which suits my game just fine.”

The Maryville junior is an avid golfer and comes from a family of golfers, so it’s of no surprise to see the success Maughan has developed for the Maryville golf team. Head Coach Brenda Ricks couldn’t be happier with his development, which Maughan feels is partly due to Assistant Coach Kyle Easter and his continuous coaching to help Maughan perfect everything from his drive to his putt as well as instilling confidence in his abilities as a golfer. The combination of his hard work and state tournament experience is setting Maughan up for a great year and it’s not even his last. The junior will have one more season after this where he will bring even more expertise to the green, but for now, Maughan will focus his efforts on May 14 and 15.

“Trey really has the potential to win state,” Ricks said. “He’s done well in terms of the mental game so far this season and I know for a fact that he’ll be able to handle the pressure. It’s just been building up to this and he’s getting stronger and stronger each year so I really look forward to state. It would have been nice to be able to go to state as a team, but we’re all looking toward next year to go back as a team. As for this year, Trey has been able to focus more on his own play versus worrying about the team’s overall performance and he’ll be down in Springfield with his dad, who is a golfer, so there are just a lot of variables that are building to be a good year for him.”

This season has mounted a bit more onto the shoulders of Maughan, who has carried the weight of the sole state-tournament golfer well, after the graduation of the other four that helped Maryville take second in the 2011 state tournament. While golfers like Kyle Leslie and Duston Wolters brought their own experience to the team, it was up to Maughan to take the top spot as the team worked through their season in preparation for the state competition.

“As a coach it’s exciting to know that Trey is returning along with Kyle Leslie and Duston Wolters, who together will help the team achieve state-winning status for our team,” Ricks said. “We’ve got a very steady amount of talents young and old next year that should make us a very strong team. It’s exciting to have that all coming on for next year.”
