I remember the big white dress that Marion Rosecrans described, but I had always envisioned Beverly Litsch Turner as the person who wore it. Might she have worn it another year? Isn’t it funny how our memories deceive us!

I remember helping to decorate the art club float, which was mounted on our old Plymouth. It was purple with many crepe paper flowers, and I thought it was gorgeous. My mother drove, and Bess Dragoo and I rode along. I don’t think I have ever been so hot in all my life! I believe this float won a prize- not first – but as I recall, the art clubbers were happy with whatever it was they did win.

Part of the picnic when the kids were young was getting them ready for the Kiddie Parade. Our best effort was, I think, Mike Malone and Joe Mutti as the Smith Brothers riding on the tandem bike. They wore straw hats and black bow ties and really looked the part of the cough drop kings. Joe and Ann were Raggedy Ann and Andy once, and I liked that coupling, too.

Melinda will remember, maybe not happily, leading Flopsie, who was gotten up as a hot dog. Melinda was chagrined to have that job, and Flopsie looked as if she were mortified. She just slunk around the parade route as far as Melinda was willing to take her! Then she just balked completely. No more embarrassment!

Mike Malone couldn’t wait to get to Hopkins from his home in Clarinda, and once there, he and his cousin, Joe, were off to the old bank corner to watch for the Evans Brother carnival to arrive. Those boys absolutely loved everything about the carnival, and I would not have been surprised if they had stowed away and become carnies.

“Butch” Barton was a regular Picnic attendee, and he and George Mutti enjoyed reminiscing about their days as neighbors. “Butch’s” dad, Paul Barton, was one of the finest ministers the Wray Memorial Methodist Church ever had, and the Barton boys and George had great fun. “Butch” was missed after he died a few years ago.

I will have more memories, I’m sure, as we go along. Anna Cross is right. The picnic has always been a special time for all of us.

Lovely bouquets, and the prospect of new pillows from our own personal representative at JC Penney’s, Melinda. Melinda’s friend, Al, a fantastic photographer, sent a picture of the Holy Mother from the mausoleum in west Chicago and two beautiful flower pictures.

I had a midday visit from my friend, Sue Larvick, bringing communion from church and an afternoon visit from another friend, Jacie Ray. Ann and her fiance, Joe, dropped by, and Joe and Melinda called. The previous day I got a nice call from granddaughter, Lauren, who was in New York City with her sister, Alex. It was surely a sad day for the girls, having lost their mother so recently.

It will be so nice to be able to stretch out my poor old legs while I compute.
