The North Nodaway R-VI Board of Education met in open and closed sessions on August 17 to handle the following business:

The tax rate was set at $4.7195 per $100 assessed valuation, with $4.1295 going toward the operating fund and 59¢ toward the debt service fund.

The 2016-17 tuition rates were set. The tuition for elementary students is $10,063. Middle and high school tuitions are $11,728 per student.

The board viewed the August MSBA Board Report which discussed effective family engagement and school bus behavior and safety.

Superintendent James Simmelink reported that the new roof has been installed on the Pickering gym. The gutters have been installed and the gym sealed so that bats can’t enter. The district must pay a $1,000 deductible. The remaining costs are covered by insurance.

Kiddie Kushion playground mulch has been placed at the Pickering school. The cost was $2,000.

A new oven was purchased for each school through a Rickard Trust grant. A new dishwasher for the Pickering building will soon arrive.

The district received the invoice for the new 2016 International bus it ordered. The bus should arrive at the end of August.

A tobacco-use handout will be included with the athletic handbook. Consequences for tobacco use on campus, or at school events, will follow separate policies.

The board approved modified class opt-out procedures. Once a student opts out of a class, it remains permanent. Students who opt-out won’t be eligible for the senior trip, among other penalties.
